Weekend Summary

Power becomes the second-ever BIG3 Champion (Trilogy, 2017) with a dominant performance that showcased why the team has been the class of the league in 2018. Power used contributions from each player on its deep roster to cap its season of dominance with hardware.

Nancy Lieberman becomes the first female head coach to lead a professional men’s team to a Championship and Power’s Corey Maggette, Cuttino Mobley, Quentin Richardson, Ryan Gomes and Xavier Silas each won their first professional championship. With the win, Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis and Chris ‘Birdman’ Andersen earned second professional championship ring.

Power Co-Captain Cuttino Mobley sealed the victory with a jumper off a drive to set off the celebration and deliver the Julius Erving Championship Trophy to Power. League MVP Corey Maggette exploded for 27 points in a dominant performance to deliver the win and earn the Championship MVP award.

3’s Company raced out to an early lead to open the game, before a pivotal momentum-shifting on-court skirmish sparked by a confrontation between Power’s Corey Maggette and 3’s Company’s Dahntay Jones. After the benches cleared, Power rode a 16-3 run to take control of the game and never looked back.

3’s Company’s Andre Emmett poured in 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a dominant game in the losing effort. Led by Emmett, 3’s Company cut a 49-34 deficit to 49-43, but the late run wasn’t enough to catch Power.

As BIG3 Champions, Power will return its entire team roster when they begin their title defense in 2019.

In the third place game, 3 Headed Monsters’ Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf drilled a three-pointer with the score tied at 49 to deliver the victory. Facing point game 47-44, Abdul-Rauf took over the game with a personal 7 point run when he dropped in a layup to close the gap to one, before hitting back-to-back threes. The three capped a run in which Abdul-Rauf took over the game with a layup to pull 3 Headed Monsters to within one at 47-44

Abdul-Rauf poured in 28 points, including four three-pointers, and Qyntel Woods delivered 20 to carry the 3 Headed Monsters to the win. Tri-State’s Amar’e Stoudemire racked up 22, including 16 of his team’s first 20 points, and David Hawkins dropped 17 in defeat.

BIG3 Co-Founder and Co-CEO Ice Cube thrilled the crowd with a special pre-game performance, featuring hits like “It Was a Good Day,” “Check Yo Self” and “You Can Do It.”

On Thursday, adidas and BIG3 hosted the league’s Young3 community outreach initiative at the Manny Cantor Center in Manhattan’s lower east side. BIG3 co-founder Ice Cube, 3’s Company’s Drew Gooden and Dahntay Jones, and Tri-State’s Robert Hite were all on hand to spend time with the kids who were treated to day of skills clinics and three-on-three tournaments.

New York’s own Nancy Lieberman and Young3 President Jerome ‘Junk Yard Dog’ Williams joined forces on Wednesday to re-open the refurbished Dream Court at the Long Beach Recreation Center. Following the ribbon-cutting, children participated in an open-court clinic conducted by the Young3.

Among the BIG3 Championship crowd were LL Cool J, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sway, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg, Hall of Famer Tina Thompson, Fetty Luciano, Rod Strickland, and Brooklyn Nets players DeMarre Carroll, Caris LeVert, Spencer Dinwiddie, Kenneth Faried, and Treveon Graham. Also in the house to support were fellow BIG3 stars whose teams didn’t advance to the Championship including Carlos Boozer, Chauncey Billups, Rashad McCants, Ricky Davis, and Charles Oakley.

An amped up crowd of 13,504 fans filled Barclays Center early and stayed late to witness BIG3 history.

Game Recaps:

Third Place Match: Tri-State - 49 vs 3-Headed Monsters - 52

If the 3rd place game was actually for the championship, this game might have gone down as one of the greatest title games in any sport. Despite missing co-captain and BIG3 rebounding and double-double king Reggie Evans, the 3-Headed Monsters used a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead. But that’s when Tri-State’s Amar’e Stoudemire took over the half and the game was eventually tied at 24.

Stoudemire was a force driving to the basket and at one point he had 16 of Tri-State’s first 20 points. “He might be auditioning right now,” Jim Jackson said on the FOX broadcast. Perhaps the NBA scouts were watching.

The 3-Headed Monsters made the last basket of the half to take a 26-24 lead. Stoudemire led all scorers at that point with 16 (7-of-9), while Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf led the Monsters with 12.

David Hawkins, who had been a force all season for Tri-State, scored the first four points of the second half to grab the lead, but the Monsters got it right back with consecutive 3-pointers from Qyntel Woods and Abdul-Rauf. The game was back-and-forth the rest of the way, with multiple lead changes, until a Hawkins jumper gave Tri-State point game at 47-44.

That’s when Abdul-Rauf took over. His layup made it 47-46, then a 3-pointer gave the Monsters a 49-47 lead. Stoudemire made a layup to tie the game at 49. That’s when Abdul-Rauf sank his fourth 3-pointer of the game to clinch the victory.

Abdul-Rauf led all scorers with 28. Woods had a double-double (20, 12). Stoudemire finished with 22 points; Hawkins had 17.

Championship Match: 3's Company - 43 vs. Power - 51

The BIG3 returned to Brooklyn, site of its first-ever games in 2017, this time to crown the league’s 2018 champion. When the smoke cleared, top-seeded Power displayed the dominance it showed all season, disposing of 3’s Company, 51-43, to earn the Julius Erving Championship Trophy before a crowd of 13,504 at Barclays Center.

Power coach Nancy Lieberman, already making history as the first female to coach a men’s professional sports team, capped off her rookie season in the BIG3 with a title. Power captain Corey Maggette, who went down with a torn Achilles in Brooklyn during the BIG3’s very first week last year, came back to earn MVP of the regular season – and then he capped it off by being MVP of the championship game with a game-high 27.

Amazingly, 3’s Company opened the scoring with a Drew Gooden 3-pointer and Andre Emmett jumper to take a 5-0 lead. After a layup from Glen “Big Baby” Davis and a 3-pointer from league MVP Corey Maggette, the game was tied at 5. The game was tied again at 7 when Maggette made a jumper to make it 9-7.

That’s when the game was briefly interrupted by what nearly became fisticuffs. Dahntay Jones made contact with Maggette on the shot release and Maggette let him hear about it after the basket. The two got heated, and benches cleared.

After refs took control and got the players settled down, Power completely took over. They closed the half on a 12-0 run, going to halftime with a 25-13 lead. Maggette led all scorers in the half with 16.

Power continued to roll as the second half began, building the lead to as much as 20. With a commanding 35-15 lead, Lieberman was asked during a break what her team had to do to close it out.

“We’re just trying to play hard,” she said. “We’re playing our game…They can’t stop our guys.”

The lead was still 15 when Power made it to the brink with a 49-34 lead. But a brief Power outage made things a little interesting. Led by Emmett, as they have been most of the season, 3’s Company scored nine straight points to close within six at 49-43.

That’s when Cuttino Mobley took matters into his own hands with a mid-range jumper to clinch the win and the championship.

Maggette finished with 27 points and 6 rebounds. Davis had 10 points; Mobley had 9. Emmett led 3’s Company with 24.

BIG3 SEASON AWARDS BRING POWER TO CENTER COURT; COREY MAGGETTE WINS MVP; NANCY LIEBERMAN NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Award Summary

The BIG3 announced the winners of the 2018 BIG3 Player Awards in advance of the Championship Game set to air live on FOX at 8pm Friday, August 24 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The honorees were nominated and voted on by the players and coaches with each member of the league able to vote once with equal weight in each available category. Players on the league’s top ranked team, Power, took home the most coveted awards recognizing the team’s hard work and competitiveness spanning the entire season.

Power Captain Corey Maggette earned the league’s top honor as the Most Valuable Player. Following a season-ending injury in the opening game last year, Maggette returned to the court in impressive form and led his team to the BIG3’s best record and a spot in the Championship game. This year, Maggette finished two points shy of the regular season scoring title, second overall in assists, tied for third overall in rebounds, and landed in the top ten in both made 3-pointers and steals. As a testament to his leadership on and off the court, Corey Maggette has also been named Player Captain of the Year. The battle for league MVP was heated this season as Tri-State’s David Hawkins received the second most votes, finishing the season in the top five in points, rebounds, assists, and steals before his team fell to Power in the BIG3 Playoffs.

Making a splash during her BIG3 debut season, Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman has been named the Coach of the Year. Her team, Power, finished the regular season as the league’s number one seed and prevailed last week in arguably the best game of the season to cement its spot in the Championship. Under her leadership, Coach Lieberman was able to get her players to buy into a truly unselfish, team-first style of basketball that separated them from the pack. Fellow Hall of Famer Gary Payton finished second in voting for Coach of the Year after leading his team to an almost perfect regular season, but he takes home the honor of Best Trash Talker for the effort he displayed with passionate exchanges with coaches, players, and referees alike all season long. The 2017 Best Trash Talker award winner Stephen Jackson and newcomer Nate Robinson were tied for second place.

NBA Champion Chris “Birdman” Andersen was drafted fourth overall this year by Power and brought his constant energy to the floor to earn Defensive Player of the Year. The league leader in blocked shots, Birdman was a force to be reckoned with at both ends of the floor, but was a standout on the defensive side of the ball with maximum effort on every possession as a rim protector who allowed his teammates to play more aggressively. 3 Headed Monsters’ Reggie Evans led the league in rebounds and double doubles, finishing a close second behind Birdman.

BIG3 breakout star Andre Emmett of 3’s Company was recognized as the 4th Man for his adaptability and key contributions all season long. Following a midseason injury to Co-Captain Baron Davis, Emmett led his team to this week’s Championship game, finishing the regular season in the top five in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. During last week’s BIG3 Playoffs, Emmett led 3’s Company to victory with a career high 27 points. Trilogy Captain Al Harrington has locked in the Too Hard to Guard title for the second year in a row. Harrington leads Trilogy in total points scored and was a constant threat on the block and the perimeter whenever he stepped on the court. Andre Emmett and 3 Headed Monsters’ Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf tied for a second place finish behind Harrington.

BIG3 has honored Ricky Davis with the inaugural BIG Community Award for all of his service to local communities with the Ricky Davis Legacy Foundation. Throughout the season, Davis led the charge and was joined by players, coaches, and BIG3 team members in each of the 10 BIG3 cities to make a real difference by visiting homeless shelters and encampments to deliver fresh produce, toiletries, and support to those who need it the most.

Weekend Summary

BIG3 set an all-time high in attendance with a total of 16,402 fans turning out in Dallas – an increase over the huge turnout of 15,125 in Dallas last year and the previous BIG3 record of 16,341 during 2018 Week 1 in Houston.

Friday’s games locked in the two teams that will compete in the 2018 BIG3 Championship Game – Power and 3’s Company – when BIG3 moves to Brooklyn next Friday night. Tri-State and 3 Headed Monsters will vie for third and fourth place, Nancy Lieberman returns home to where her career began, and Ice Cube will give a special performance at Barclays Arena before the games.

The two coaches vying for the Championship are both new to BIG3 this season. Power’s coach Nancy Lieberman becomes the first female coach of a professional men’s team to lead a team to the Finals; 3’s Company coach Michael Cooper has a chance to win a BIG3 title after being the only person to win titles in the NBA, WNBA, and D-League.

Solidifying their position as the Championship favorites, Power had an intense match up against Tri-State that turned into a nail-biter with thrilling back and forth plays at the end that brought fans throughout the entire arena to their feet. Corey Maggette led the team with 16 points followed by Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis with 15 points and Cuttino Mobley with 14 points.

3’s Company, led by Texas native Andre Emmett, dominated 3 Headed Monsters to lock in their spot in the 2018 BIG3 Finals. After having only four points in the first half, Emmett ended the game with a career high 27 points including one of the nights five four point shots. 3’s Company shooting percentage was also at a high with 53% in first half, 75% in second half and 5-7 from the three point range.

Notable Dallas faces came out to show their support for the 2018 BIG3 playoffs, including NBA superstars Jason Terry, Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith, Jalen Brunson, and IBF Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr. The crowd was also treated to two special performances during the night: 10-year-old DJ Livia who got the stadium on its feet with an up-tempo turntable set and celebrated rapper Baby Bash who brought the house down with one of his best-known hits, “Cyclone.”

On Thursday, BIG3 and Adidas’ youth initiative, Young3, ran an all-day basketball clinic and tournament at the Cedar Springs Boys & Girls Club in Dallas. On Friday morning, the Ricky Davis Legacy Foundation visited Family Gateway, a homeless shelter for children and families, to give back to the community and donate food to the homeless. BIG3 Co-Founder and Co-CEO Ice Cube accompanied BIG3 players and coaches including Charles Oakley, Rick Barry, Kwame Brown, Kenyon Martin, and Robert Hite.

Game Recaps:

Game 1: Ghost Ballers - 35 (1-8) vs Ball Hogs - 50 (2-7)

Ball Hogs captured the seventh seed by defeating Ghost Ballers for the second time this season. The Hogs didn’t beat any other team this year, but they outscored the Ballers 100-75 in their two meetings. All of the scoring came from three players: Andre Owens – who had a 4-pointer and three 3-pointers – and Josh Childress led the way with 19 each. Jermaine Taylor had 12. Ricky Davis, the 2018 BIG3 scoring leader, led the Ghost Ballers with 14.

The Ball Hogs finish the season at 2-7; Ghost Ballers end at 1-8

Game 2: Killer 3's - 51 (4-5) vs. Trilogy - 47 (3-6)

Even though this was not a playoff game, these teams had the intensity ratcheted up. The Killer 3s, looking to avenge a Week 4 loss to Trilogy, took a 25-17 lead into halftime. Then Trilogy went on an 8-0 run early in the second half to pull within two at 27-25. The Killer 3s went on a run of their own and figured to close t out easily when they got to 49-37. But Trilogy went on a 10-0 run to make things interesting. In such a physical game, it was appropriately ended with a foul shot, as Alan Anderson sank it for the win. Anderson had 18 points, including 12 in the second half. Killer 3s co-captain Stephen Jackson got his second double-double of the season with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Al Harrington led Trilogy with 18 and James White had 14, including a 4-pointer.

The Killer 3's season finishes at 4-5; Trilogy's record ends at 3-6

Game 3 (BIG3 Playoffs Semifinal #1): Tri-State - 49 (5-4) vs. Power - 51 (8-1)

Power avenged their only loss of the season, but it was not easy. Corey Maggette, who scored a BIG3 single-game record 34 in the Week 3 loss to Tri-State, opened the scoring here with a 3-pointer. Glen “Big Baby” Davis was a force inside for Power, while David Hawkins kept Tri-State within reach. Cuttino Mobley’s put-back gave Power a 26-23 halftime lead.

Jermaine O’Neal came out strong to start the second half, leading Tri-State on an 8-0 run that gave them the lead. But then Maggette hit another 3-pointer to give Power the lead right back. Another Maggette 3 gave Power a 37-33 lead.

Hawkins showed why he’s an MVP candidate when he drove past Maggette and Big Baby, sank the basket, was fouled and completed the 3-point play to tie the game at 40. The teams went back and forth after that, until Hawkins hit a natural 3-pointer to tie it at 47.

After they traded 2-pointers and were tied at 49, Big Baby had the ball and was looking to end the game. But thanks to great defense from O’Neal, Big Baby couldn’t get a shot off when the shot clock expired. Tri-State got the ball back with a chance to win – but Quentin Richardson made a steal and got the ball to Big Baby under the basket. Before he could put in the game-winner, Hawkins fouled him. Big Baby went down very hard and stayed down for a while. But after he shook it off and got up, he sank the game-winning foul shot to put Power in the BIG3 Championship Game.

Maggette led all scorers with 16, while Big Baby had 15 and Mobley 14. Hawkins scored 15 for Tri-State while O’Neal had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Tri-State's playoff exit ends their season record at 5-4; Power are 8-1 going into the Championship.

Game 4 (BIG3 Playoffs Semifinal #2): 3's Company - 50 (6-3) vs 3-Headed Monsters - 28 (7-2)

The 3-Headed Monsters were hoping to make it to the BIG3 finals for the second straight year, but Andre Emmett simply would not allow it. Emmett started the season on the bench for 3’s Company, but he’s been the hottest player in the league the last four weeks, and his fourth straight game with 20 or more points put his team in the finals.

3’s Company co-captain Drew Gooden had a pair of 3-pointers early and Emmett’s reverse layup gave them a 12-4 lead. They built the lead to 11 going into halftime at 25-14. Reggie Evans had 10 points at halftime, doing his best to keep the 3-Headed Monsters in the game.

But the lead stayed double digits throughout the second half. At one point the Monsters seemed to be picking up momentum, and that’s when Emmett hit a 3-pointer to put 3’s Company up 37-22.

When Jason Maxiell put in the game-winning bucket, Emmett had 27 points. Dahntay Jones had 11. Evans led the Monsters with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

Emmett, who lives in Dallas and had a large contingent of family and friends in the house, was clearly pumped up by the home crowd.

“It feels great,” Emmett said after the game. “My whole city came out to support me and it was awesome.”

3's Company enters the Championship at 6-3; The 3-Headed Monsters leave the playoffs at 7-2

Weekend Summary

The city of Boston showed their love for BIG3’s debut in the city with an official attendance of 13,684, a particularly impressive figure given the game took place at the same time as the Boston Red Sox rivalry against the New York Yankees.

The night got underway with a thunderous standing ovation honoring the return of Boston fan-favorite Brian Scalabrine, whose Ball Hogs squared off against Trilogy in Game 1. 2008 NBA Champion Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis, Nate Robinson, and Ricky Davis were among the numerous former Celtics who put on a show for the packed house.

Friday night’s games locked in the playoff picture as Tri-State eliminated Killer 3s from contention in Week 7’s most exciting and hard fought game. 3’s Company and Tri-State officially punched their tickets, joining 3 Headed Monsters and Power to round out the the BIG3 2018 Playoffs.

Power put an end to the 3 Headed Monsters undefeated season, winning 51-40 in the evening’s most anticipated matchup and what could very likely be a preview of this year’s Championship game.  Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis delighted fans in his Boston homecoming going 6 for 11 from the field for 15 points, while Chris ‘Birdman’ Andersen electrified the crowd with a monster dunk and block.

On Thursday, adidas and BIG3 hosted the league’s Young3 community outreach initiative at the Boys & Girls Club in Charlestown, MA. Former Celtics and current BIG3 Captains Brian Scalabrine and Nate Robinson were on hand to spend time with the kids who were treated to day of skills clinics and three-on-three tournaments.

On Friday morning, former Celtic Ricky Davis, the Ricky Davis Legacy Foundation, and BIG3 players visited several homeless encampments throughout the city of Boston to deliver much-needed fresh produce and toiletries.

Game Recaps:

Game 1: Trilogy - 51 (2-5) vs Ball Hogs - 45 (1-6)

One week after defending BIG3 champion Trilogy was eliminated from playoff contention, they had to take the court without their leading scorer and rebounder, co-captain Al Harrington. And it showed early, as the Ball Hogs led throughout the first half. Led by a strong effort from Andre Owens, the Ball Hogs went to halftime with a 26-20 lead.

But Trilogy slowly clawed its way back. After opening the second half on a 15-6 roll, Trilogy took a 35-32 lead. The game went back-and-forth from there. DeShawn Stevenson hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 35 and then Jermaine Taylor’s 3-pointer put the Ball Hogs back on top. Trilogy came back with strong play from Derrick Byars and Rashad McCants. After tying the game at 43, Trilogy finally pulled away. A McCants dunk made it 49-43 and then a McCants layup on their next possession ended it. With Harrington out of the lineup, four Trilogy players finished in double figures – Byars (17), Al Thornton (12), McCants (10) and James White (10). Stevenson and Owens led the Ball Hogs with 14 each.

The Ball Hogs move up to 1-6; Trilogy falls to 2-5

Game 2: Killer 3's - 45 (2-5) vs. Tri-State - 51 (5-2)

As was the case in Game 1 Friday, the team that trailed at halftime of Game 2 came back to win. And in this case, it was a playoff-clinching win for Tri-State. Tri-State captain Jermaine O’Neal returned to action after missing three weeks with a shoulder injury and he led his team with 8 points in the first half. But the Killer 3s – looking to stave off playoff elimination – came out hot. Led by Stephen Jackson and Mike James, the Killer 3s went into halftime with a 27-21 lead.

And they kept the pressure on in the second half. A 3-pointer from Jackson and two 3’s from Alan Anderson helped the Killer 3s build a 40-29 lead. That’s when Tri-State came roaring back. After scoring eight straight to close within three, Nate Robinson hit a 4-pointer to give Tri-State its first lead since the opening moments of the game. They pulled away from there, and David Hawkins’ game-winning jumper capped a 22-5 Tri-State run. Hawkins, a leading MVP candidate, recorded his first career double-double, leading his team with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Robinson and Amar’e Stoudemire had 12 apiece for Tri-State. For the Killer 3s, Jackson had a double-double (15,11) and Anderson had 13 points.

The Killer 3's are 2-5; Tri-State improves to 5-2

Game 3: 3-Headed Monsters - 40 (6-1) vs. Power - 51 (6-1)

By knocking off the previously unbeaten 3-Headed Monsters, Power literally changed the balance of power in the BIG3. Holding the head-to-head tiebreaker, Power can now clinch the top seed in the playoffs next week with a win over the Ball Hogs or a 3-Headed Monsters loss to the Ghost Ballers.

The 3-Headed Monsters had been 6-0 despite being without captain and reigning MVP Rashard Lewis for most of the season. Newcomer Qyntel Woods had been a valuable addition to the team, but he was out for Friday’s game. The thinned-out roster was evident. After both teams exchanged early baskets, Power went on a 17-4 run that sent them to halftime with a 25-16 lead.

Power continued to pour it on. Cuttino Mobley drove to the basket and sank a layup that made it 31-18. At 35-22, Mobley drove again but this time dished to a wide-open Chris Andersen for a thunder dunk. After Power took an insurmountable 47-30 lead, the Monsters staged a modest comeback with 10 straight, but after a Corey Maggette free throw made it 49-40, former Celtic Glen “Big Baby” Davis put in a reverse layup for the game-winner. Davis finished with 15, while Corey Maggette led Power with 16. For the 3-Headed Monsters, Reggie Evans had his league-leading fourth double-double of the season, with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

The 3-Headed Monsters and Power are both on equal footing at 6-1.

Game 4: 3's Company - 51 (5-2) vs Ghost Ballers - 33 (1-6)

If you expected 3’s Company to let down a bit since they already clinched a playoff spot earlier in the night, think again. Sure, the Killer 3s’ loss to Tri-State ensured 3’s Company would be in the postseason. But clearly they’re looking for more. Week 6 Player of the Week Andre Emmett scored the first 8 points of the game and 3’s Company never looked back.

After taking a 25-14 lead into halftime, 3’s Company maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half. Carlos Boozer hit a 3-pointer for the Ghost Ballers that made it 31-23, but that’s as close as they got. Emmett, who scored 23 last week, led the way with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Drew Gooden, who finished with 10, hit a 3-pointer for his second game-winning shot of the season. Boozer and Ricky Davis each had 15 for the Ghost Ballers.

3's Company moves up to 5-2; Ghost Ballers fall to is 1-6

"Players and coaches from the Ghost Ballers, Ball Hogs and Trilogy can all send their thank-you notes to Jamario Moon, care of the 3-Headed Monsters. When Moon hit that 4-pointer to give his team a Week 5 win in front of a packed house at American Airlines Arena in Miami last Friday, it not only clinched a playoff berth for the Monsters. By defeating 3’s Company, it kept slim playoff hopes alive for those other squads.

With three weeks left in the regular season, the undefeated 3-Headed Monsters haven’t clinched the top seed – they still have just a one-game lead on Tri-State and Power. But the general playoff picture is starting to come into place. The top four seeds will play in the first round of the playoffs (Aug. 17 in Dallas)..."

Game Recaps:

Game 1: Tri-State 51 (4-1) vs Ghost Ballers 40 (0-5)

“I’m having a great time,” Tri-State’s David Hawkins told Michael Rapaport at halftime. “Winning is always fun.”

Hawkins, who has emerged this season as a serious MVP candidate, scored the game’s first points on a layup and Tri-State never looked back. Even with captain Jermaine O’Neal sitting out with a shoulder injury, Tri-State had little trouble with the Ghost Ballers. Whether driving to the net or shooting from long range, Hawkins was on fire. He finished the first half with 16 as Tri-State had a 12-3 run to go into the break with a 26-15 lead. That run included Hawkins’ league-leading third 4-pointer of the season.

Tri-State continued to build on the lead as the second half began. They led by as many as 17 when Ricky Davis started getting a hot hand for the Ghost Ballers. Davis finished with 22, hitting a 4-pointer of his own that brought the score to 49-40. But that’s as close as they’d get. Tri-State coach Julius Erving called a timeout after Davis’ 4-pointer. When play resumed, Nate Robinson took a pass from Hawkins, drove to the net and then dished to Amar’e Soudemire for the game-winning layup. Hawkins had his first BIG3 double-double (25 points, 10 rebounds). Stoudemire had 10 and Robinson had 9.

Tri-State improves to 4-1; the Ghost Ballers are 0-5

Game 2: Killer 3s 50 (2-3) vs Ball Hogs 38 (1-4)

With 1-3 records, both teams entered this critical game aiming to keep playoff hopes alive. Alan Anderson scored the first 6 points of the game and then Killer 3s co-captain Stephen Jackson hit a 3-pointer to make it 9-0. Not to be outdone, the Ball Hogs went on a 9-2 run of their own to tie the game at 11. After Metta World Peace hit a 3-pointer to give the Killer 3s an 18-15 lead, the Ball Hogs went on a 10-0 run to close out the half. When Andre Owens hit a 3, his Ball Hogs went to the break with a 25-18 lead.

Stephen Jackson had his squad fired up when the second half began, and they chipped away until another Jackson 3-pointer game his team a 34-33 lead. It was part of a 17-2 run for the Killer 3s that gave them a commanding 45-35 lead. Jackson hit another 3-pointer to make it 48-38, then closed out the game with a layup. Jackson finished with a game-high 22 points and 8 rebounds. Anderson had 12 and Metta World Peace had 10. Owens led the Ball Hogs with 14. Josh Childress had 10 and Jermaine Taylor had 9.

“We needed this win,” said Jackson after the game. “This’ll get us back in the hunt.”

The Killer 3s are 2-3; the Ball Hogs are 1-4

Game 3: Power 51 (5-1) vs Trilogy 49 (1-4)

Trilogy players received their Alex and Ani 2017 BIG3 Championship rings before the game and then looked to build on the momentum they had from winning their first game of 2018 last week in Detroit. Problem is, they ran into a Power squad that was just as motivated. The result was a knockdown, drag-out fight to the finish. Easily the most physical game of the night, fouls played a key role in the outcome.

Trilogy got off to an 11-2 start thanks to solid play from Rashad McCants, but then Quentin Richardson scored the next 7 as part of a 12-2 Power run. Surprisingly, the BIG3’s leading scorer, Corey Maggette, was held scoreless through most of the first half. Power coach Nancy Lieberman, who was mic’d for FS1, made sure the refs knew what she was thinking.

“Every time Corey Maggette gets the ball, he gets mugged!” Lieberman exclaimed.

Sure enough, Maggette’s first points of the night came on a free throw, giving Power a 20-17 lead. But then Trilogy went on an 8-0 run to reach halftime with a 25-20 lead.

Power came on strong to start the second half, going on a 13-0 run to take a 35-32 lead. It was back and forth from there. Eventually, a McCants 3-pointer gave Trilogy a 48-45 lead. But they couldn’t close the deal. Glen “Big Baby” Davis hit a layup to make it 48-47. Maggette drove to the basket to give Power a 49-48 lead. Power got the ball back and Maggette was fouled by Al Harrington. The resulting free throw won it for Power. After scoring only 2 in the first half, Maggette led Power with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Three other Power players were in double figures: Cuttino Mobley (12), Davis (10) and Richardson (10). McCants had a game-best 17, while Harrington had a double-double (15, 11).

Power is 4-1; Trilogy is 1-4

Game 4: 3 Headed Monsters 50 (5-0) vs 3’s Company 47 (3-2)

For the first time in BIG3 history, a game was decided on a 4-point shot – but the guy who sank it isn’t who you thought it would be. The 3-Headed Monsters looked to remain the league’s only unbeaten team, even though they are without reigning BIG3 MVP Rashard Lewis. For their part, 3’s Company was also shorthanded, missing co-captain and team scoring leader Baron Davis. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf has been making one clutch shot after another for the Monsters and he hit a pair of early 3-pointers as his squad built a 26-21 halftime lead. But the 3-Headed Monsters leading scorer at the half was Jamario Moon, who just signed with the team last week and was seeing his first action of the season. With Abdul-Rauf sitting most of the second half and Qyntel Woods not as effective as he had been in previous weeks, Moon found himself carrying the Monsters.

But 3’s Company fought back with strong play from Andre Emmett and clutch shooting from captain DerMarr Johnson. A Jason Maxiell layup tied the game at 39, but Moon’s fourth 3-pointer of the game made it 46-41. However, after three straight failed possessions by the Monsters, a Drew Gooden put-back suddenly gave 3’s Company a 47-46 lead. 3-Headed Monsters coach Gary Payton wanted a timeout to get Abdul-Rauf back in the game. Good thing he couldn’t get it. Moon got the ball and went straight for the 4-point circle and knocked down the game-winner.

Moon finished with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-9 shooting. Reggie Evans had 10 points and 7 rebounds. Abdul-Rauf finished with 8. Emmett paced 3’s Company with 18. Johnson had 13.

The 3-Headed Monsters are 5-0; 3’s Company is 3-2
